It was early morning and the sun was shining. Derak sat down in a seat at a diner. He let his gang run around for a few hours, so he can have something to eat. After he ordered, Derak looked out the window seeing people talking and walking.
A family caught his eyes and Derak stared at them. A little boy holding his mom stared at Derak through the window. The boy took a look at Derak and hid behind his mommy. Derak laughed softly, but sighed as the family walked away. “Brings back memories!” Derak sighed.

“Mommy!” A little boy cried as the building started to crumble.

“Quick get him out of here!” A woman said to a man. She shoved the boy into his hands and the two started to run. But then the woman tripped over a lamp. A piece of block fell between the two people. “Get him out of here!” The lady cried as the building crumbled more. The man hesitated, but quickly ran out of the building as fast as he could.
The man finally burst through the front door of the building. The police squad and the fire fighters arrived. “Quick, she’s in there!” The man said and pointed at the crumbling building. Before the police squad or fire fighters could do anything, the building crumbled and there was a big explosion. The building was crushed to dust and dirt.
The man quickly searched the crumbling building for the lady. Moving crumbled stone away, he found her, bruised and not breathing. The man cried hugging the lady close to him pouring out tears. The little boy watched as the man cried and sniffed. “Mommy?”

Derak popped his bubble gum. “Another day!” He sighed as he went to his closet and took out his black jacket. After tying a blue handkerchief to his head and placing his sunglasses over his eyes, he sat down on the couch in the living room, where his dad was sitting in a chair.
“Derak...” his father began and shook his head, “What is with these grades?” Derak’s father held up his report card with D’s on ever subject.

Derak looked at the floor and scratched his head. “Sorry, pop, I guess I wasn’t paying attention to the teacher.” Derak answered as he blew another bubble.

Derak’s father shook his head and sighed. He got up and looked at a picture of his wife. “Derak...” he began again, “Why are you acting like this? Don’t you know if this keeps on going on, you’ll be taking the same classes everyday, and you won’t be able to graduate from high school.”

Derak popped another bubble, “Who cares, it’s no fun, besides I already know the stuff. I’m not smart like my sister who knows everything!”

Derak’s father walked towards Derak, lifted his hand, and whacked it against Derak’s face. Derak fell to the ground grabbing a hold of his cheek. Derak’s father grabbed Derak by the collar of his jacket, “Don’t talk about your sister that way. She has looked after you and me and has done very much for us. You should appreciate that you have a sister, especially after what had happen to your mother who saved you from the earthquake.” Derak’s Father dropped down and started to cry.

Derak stood there looking at his father. “I’m sorry pop! I’ll do better! I promise!” Derak’s father kept crying, so Derak went up to his room.

That night, Derak couldn’t sleep. He thought about his mother saving him from the earthquake and risking her life for his. “If only I could have helped her!” Derak thought to himself. He knew he shouldn’t be here at all since his dad and his teachers hated him. Derak decided to run away and tried to live on his own. He packed up what he needed and snuck out of his room.
Derak was about to leave, when he heard his sister’s voice. He went into her room and saw her, sleeping peacefully. Derak knew he would miss his sister because for all she had done for him and his dad. He sighed and kissed his sister good night. “Good-Bye Lizzie!” he said as he closed the door to her room, not seeing a tear rolling down her sister’s eye.

After many days, Derak rode on the road with his motorcycle. He remembered when his sister gave it to him on his birthday and everyday he would give her a ride to school. He sighed again, but tried to shake the memory away. Suddenly he ran into a couple of gang members that circled him. “Well, well!” A guy with spiky red and orange hair said as he got off his bike, “What do we have here? Looks like a little kid driving his tricycle!” The gang laughed and Derak gritted his teeth. “What’s the matter kid? You lost?” The guy asked and laughed again. Derak at this time got mad and smacked the guy in the face. “Ow! You…” The guy cursed and dove at Derak. The two fought for a while until they collapsed to the ground.

The gang looked at them for a moment and then they got up. The guy looked at Derak still ready to fight. They guy held his head high and laugh till he cried: “Ha! That was some good fight there! How you like to join our gang?” The guy asked.

Derak, shocked and surprised, didn’t say anything, but shook the guy’s hand. “Uh... sure!”

The guy laughed, “What’s your name kid?”

“Derak!”

The guy laughed again, “Hi! I’m Bryan!”

It was nighttime when Bryan and his gang stopped to set up camp. “So, you ran away from home huh?” Bryan said spooning out some stew for Derak.

“Yeah! Everyone hated me. The teachers, my friends, even my dad hates me.”

Bryan sat down and looked at the stars above him. “Yeah, I know how you feel. I ran away from my parents because I couldn’t do anything right. They thought I was stupid and I was ignoring them. Finally I ran away and formed this gang. We steal people’s stuff and scare the pants off them. I think of my gang as my family because they understand how I feel and is always there for me.”

“Hmm! That sounds cool.” Derak said as he ate.

“Yeah, but still I think of my young brother who always looked up to me. He would smile and copied what I did. I guess you can say we were twins. He even gave me this chain necklace because he thought I was very tough and that I would look tough if I wear it. Yeah, I was sad, when I ran away from him to go find a better place for me” As Derak listened, he thought of his sister finding him not there; away and maybe thinking of him. “Better get some sleep.” Bryan said, “We'll be leaving soon!” Derak nodded and wrapped the jacket around him.

It was still dark when Derak woke up from a nightmare about everyone killing him. ‘Man…must be the food I ate.’ Derak rubbed the sleeps out of his eyes and looked around. He then noticed that Bryan was gone. ‘Maybe he went for a walk.’ He thought and went back to sleep. “I wonder if this is right for me to run away. I feel like something is hurting inside me.” Suddenly he heard an explosion coming from somewhere behind a hill.

A bunch of boys flew through the air and landed on the ground. Derak rushed to one of them. “What happened?” He cried.

“Leader… in… trouble…” The boy replied and then fainted.

‘BRYAN!’ Derak thought and quickly rushed towards the hill. He saw a black person followed by three other black persons, surrounding Bryan.

“What do you want from me?” Bryan cried. The black people didn’t answer, but charged towards him.

Derak watched from behind the hill. “What the heck are those?” He said watching as they smacked Bryan, “What should I do? Maybe I’ll get help from a policeman or someone.” Derak thought and got up to run, but he sat down. ‘What am I thinking?’ he thought, ‘They might kill him or take him somewhere if I leave. Well I’m not going to lose anyone anymore.’ Derak leaped from his hiding place and charged at the black persons.

“DERAK?!” Bryan said surprised. The two boys attacked the three black people knocking them out. The black person looked at them and send a black beam at them. They both jumped away from it and tried to attack again. The black person knocked them away and send another beam towards Derak. Derak tried to run away, but tripped over a rock. The beam headed towards him faster and Derak covered his eyes in fear.

Suddenly Bryan stood in front of Derak and took the blow of the beam. Derak watched as Bryan hit the ground bleeding. Derak suddenly remembered this same memory of his mother saving him from the broken building that fell down on her. Tears fell from his eyes and then looked angry at the black person.

He took his sunglasses off and gritted his teeth. “You killed my best friend, but you are not going to leave alive!” His hands started to glow green, “RUMBLING VOICE!” He smashed the ground and tons of rocks buried the black person underneath. Derak went over to the pile of rocks to search for the person, but it was gone and so were its three helpers. He rushed back to where Bryan is. “Bryan, please be okay.”

Bryan opened one eye and stared at Derak. “Derak…I… know… you... for a short…time… but…. I want… you… to be the leader of my gang.”

“No you must not die. I’ll get you a doctor or anyone to…” Bryan held up his hand and placed something into Derak’s hand.

“Here take this. It will remind me of our friendship for a short time. You just look after my gang…and…always... don’t forget me. Good-Bye…Derak!” Bryan’s eyes closed and his hand fell back to his body.

Derak looked at what Bryan give him. It was a chain that Bryan’s brother gave him to look tough.

Derak started to cried and held Bryan. “Don’t leave me, Bryan! Don’t leave!”

“HEY!” A voice startled Derak. “Are you going to eat or what?” The waitress placed the food before him.

By this time, Kitt came in looking happy. “Oh man! That was so funny to see Jimmy getting beaten up at Rising Fighters by a girl!” She laughed. Derak didn’t say anything. “Hey what’s wrong?” Kitt asked, “You aren’t eating your food.”

Derak pushed the plate to her. “I’m not hungry! You can have it.” Kitt happily ate the food as Derak stared at the chain around his neck. ‘I’ll never forget you Dad, Mom, Lizzie, and you too Bryan. I will never forget you... ever.”

The end.
