The Heart of the Universe is not a person, but a gem. It holds the essence of the universe, as well as everything that is good. The opposite of The Heart is The Black Crystal, which holds the essence of chaos and everything evil. Without one, the other cannot exist.
Still, the dark King Shadow believed that without The Heart, universal domination would be within his grasp. He thought he had destroyed it, but the crystal was split up in at least seven pieces (maybe even more!). The shards took possession of Nova Young, Ember Burns, Shelly Stellamare, Sky Etoile, Rose Green, Tiamat and Saigo Ryuko: the new Guardians.
Still, the question remains: if all shards are united... why doesn't The Heart unite as well? Wouldn't that solve a lot of problems?
